Sermon - Extended version of Adhan. Not Rashad giving sermon.
(0:03) Ashuda la ilaha illallah Ashuda la ilaha illallah (0:23) Khayyal al-salah, khayyal al-salah (0:28) Khayyal al-fala, khayyal al-fala (0:31) Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illa Allah, Alhamdulillah, we praise Allah subhana wa ta'ala. (1:10) We are delighted to be here in this afternoon, in this mansion, to invite you by the afternoon prayer. (1:22) Dr. Khalifa asked me to stand here this afternoon to put the khutba here, here by the system. (1:31) I must admit that this is my first time I stand in front of the audience to put the khutba and it is a big honor for me (1:43) because the audience is not any audience but the audience is the students of the Qur'an so this is really a big honor for me. (1:53) My talk today will concern about the hafizatullah which I think still is the biggest issue facing us as Muslims. (2:16) Since I come from a place where the majority of the people are the Muslim or the so called Muslim masses, (2:25) I can appreciate more that we discuss this topic because we can see from our experience here in the US where Muslims are the minority, (2:41) that by talking about hafizatullah we arouse the anger of many people. (2:47) You can see that some people come here and they make a very violent reaction because our stand is to run alone, (2:57) we reject the hafizatullah and so I can appreciate more the hardship or the danger faced by Dr. Khalifa when he was in the Middle East (3:09) where the majority are Muslim. The reaction must be very violent to him and I can imagine too that in most places where the Muslim masses are the majority, (3:22) they will give a very hard time or they will ridicule you at least because you stand against the hafizatullah. (3:39) Incidentally, there is a new book by Dr. Khalifa about the Quran, hafiz and Islam, so I draw more from the book and also from the Quran. (3:54) We know from the Quran study in this masjid that the Quran should be the one and only source for us as a guidance. (4:06) We started from the beginning of this masjid to accept the Quran as the only source, we sort of take it for granted that we take Quran as the only source. (4:22) However, as I said, as a person who comes from a place where the majority are Muslim, the discussion of this really takes a great deal of courage if you want to say that, (4:46) in those places, because you will face, like I said, a very violent reaction from them. (4:56) And I think, for myself, I am still thinking that I am very lucky to come here, to learn the real truth from the Quran, (5:09) because this is the place, the first place that I can get a chance to really study what the Quran is, (5:16) and therefore I can see the real truth in the Quran. (5:32) To my observation, the Muslim masses around the world are generally ignorant of the Quran. (5:42) They do everything according to what the scholars say, or what the older generation or the parents say. (5:51) And so they are never there, most of them are never there to open the Quran and study it, and they just leave the discussion of the Quran to the scholars. (6:02) But we are commanded in the Quran that we have to uphold the Quran and we have to study the Quran to be a good Muslim. (6:14) Because of their ignorance, there is a tendency that the Muslim masses tend to mix up the Quran with the other sources, (6:28) because they accept the Quran, but they also accept the Hadith and Sunnah and other sources of jurisprudence as a guidance to the religion. (6:39) And in the end, they tend to mix up everything, they say that this is from the Quran, and they don't bother to open it from the Quran to check whether, (6:50) whereas in the real case it's not from the Quran. (6:52) One of the good examples that I can find is about the prohibition. (6:59) Prohibition in the Quran is specifically stated only four. (7:04) But if you go to, at least to my place, they will say that not only there are four prohibitions, but you have also other prohibitions. (7:16) Like you cannot eat something that lives in, or animals that live in food environment, or amphibious animals. (7:30) They say that, I'm sure that this must be from the Hadith and Sunnah, but in the end, people think that this comes from the Quran. (7:39) And I met one here that said that also, that this is from the Quran, that you cannot eat this amphibious animal. (7:49) Then I said, well, you know, please show me the person in the Quran. (7:54) He doesn't eat the woman in the Quran. (7:57) So I think there is a tendency to generally to mix up, finally they mix up the Quran with other sources. (8:04) That is why we have to study the Quran and the only Quran of the source. (8:20) One of the most popular reasons for the advocates of Hadith and Sunnah is saying that, in fact, we need Hadith and Sunnah to explain the Quran. (8:38) Because Quran is not complete, and Quran is not fully detailed, so we need Hadith and Sunnah to explain it. (8:47) In fact, the character of the Quran and the Iqtad, the person in the Quran that says that the Quran is complete, perfect, and fully detailed. (8:59) This is in the first, one of the examples that I can find is in the first, 629. (9:11) Any creature on earth, and any birds that fly with wings, are all nations like thee. (9:17) We did not leave anything out of this picture. (9:22) To their Lord they will be gathered. (9:24) And also in the next verse, 639 says that those who reject our revelation are deaf, dumb, and in total darkness. (9:34) Whomever God wills, He signs on straight, and on whomever He wills, He places on straight path. (9:42) Also in the same surah, on verse 114 and 115. (9:50) 114 says, Shall I seek other than God as a source of love, when He revealed to you this book fully detailed? (9:59) Even those who receive this scripture command that you take them from your Lord totally. (10:04) Therefore you shall not have any doubt. (10:08) And 115 says, The work of your Lord is complete, in truth and justice. (10:16) Nothing shall abrogate His work. He is the Creator and the Lord. (10:25) So therefore, this verse clearly shows to us that this nullifies the argument from the aphorism of Hadith and Sunnah. (10:35) That the Quran is not complete and not perfect and fully detailed. (10:38) But like I said, because generally the Muslim masses are ignorant of the Quran, they do not bother to open the Quran and check the argument. (10:53) Another argument is saying that we need Hadith and Sunnah to explain the Quran. (11:01) And two days ago I met a guy here in the University of Arizona that just said that. (11:07) So I think this is also a valid argument that the Khalifa said in his book. (11:12) Many Muslims, or so-called Muslims let us say, use this argument as advocates for Hadith and Sunnah. (11:23) You know from the Quran that only Allah can explain the Quran. (11:28) We see that in the first 19 of Surah 75. (11:41) 75, 19 says, (11:50) Let's start from 18. (11:53) Once we recite it, you shall follow this Quran. (11:57) Then you just leave, we will explain it. (12:01) So this is a very clear cut verse that says that only Allah will explain the Quran. (12:08) Another Surah that I can find here is 55, verses 1 and 2. (12:19) This is the Surah most gracious of our Allah. (12:22) The first says God most gracious. (12:28) And the second says the one who teaches the Quran. (12:31) So only we understand and we know from the Quranic study that only Allah will teach us the Quran and lead us to understand the Quran. (12:43) It also nullifies another argument from the Hadith and Sunnah advocates that says (12:47) we need Hadith and Sunnah to explain the Quran because the Quran is not clear. (13:05) In the second part of the Quran I will try to convey some ideas from the Quran about Hadith and Sunnah. (13:38) As we can see from the first part of the Quran, we clearly see from the Quran that we don't need Hadith and Sunnah as source of religious teachings because we have one and only self which is the Quran. (13:51) And the Quran is fully detailed, complete and we don't need any other sources to explain the Quran. (13:59) And only God, only Allah teaches and explains the Quran. (14:06) Now the question is why exist Hadith and Sunnah? What is the purpose of that? (14:19) Before we discuss that, we will prove, we will see that actually as source of the religious teachings, the Quran is free and we don't need other sources. (14:41) Therefore the Quran says that we don't need any other sources and therefore nullifies the Hadith and Sunnah. (14:50) But Hadith and Sunnah itself is also proven wrong by itself because if we read many of famous books about Hadith and Sunnah we can see that there are so many contradictions in Hadith and Sunnah. (15:07) And so we cannot accept that as a source of religious teachings. (15:20) In mathematical jargon we use what we call the proof by contradiction. (15:27) So if we want to prove something, that something is wrong, we assume first that this is correct and then we find something inside that contradicts the assumption. (15:41) Therefore we can prove that this assumption is wrong. (15:44) And I think this argument can be used also to prove that Hadith and Sunnah is wrong because if we read the various books of Hadith we can find that there are many statements in Hadith and Sunnah. (16:11) Some of them say that the Prophet Muhammad says in one of the Hadiths according to them that you will not write anything from me except from the Quran. (16:32) So anything that you write from me besides the Quran you shall erase it. (16:37) And therefore this also says that if we assume that Hadith and Sunnah is wrong we have to accept this. (16:45) And therefore this statement says that we cannot write anything from him except the Quran because the Quran is revealed from Allah to us through Muhammad. (16:59) So everything besides the Quran we cannot follow because we only follow Muhammad when he talks about the Quran. (17:11) So this Hadith says that we cannot write anything from him except from the Quran. (17:18) This nullifies the argument that we have to follow Hadith and Sunnah because the argument is we assume that Hadith and Sunnah is correct but we pass the conviction to prove that this is wrong. (17:33) Another thing is Hadith that says when somebody asks the wife of Prophet Muhammad Aisha to explain about the character of Muhammad that we should follow and the character of Muhammad she says is the Quran. (17:55) Therefore to follow Muhammad means to follow the Quran only and only the Quran and nothing else. (18:01) And also from the Quranic study we understand that the Quran says we don't need any other sources besides the Quran as a source for Jewish products. (18:15) And we see that in Surah 6 verse 1-5 says (18:29) Additionally we have accounted for every prophet, enemies from among the Jewish people and individuals, who invent and narrate to each other fancy words in order to deceive. (18:43) Had your Lord willed, they would not have done it. You shall be pleased with their plan and their inventions. (18:51) Therefore we can see very clearly from this verse that Allah said apart from every prophet, enemies among the human beings, devils and individuals, which narrates to each other (19:09) because we understand that when the Jews received the Torah, then they narrated other sources besides Torah and the Quran which is exactly the same as Hadith and Sunnah in the Muslim world. (19:27) So when we see that something is wrong with them, majority of the Muslims do not see why, what's wrong with us. (19:36) Because there is a very clear parallelism between the Jews and the Muslims. (19:44) Because the Jews fall into the trap of idol worship by creating Hadith and Sunnah in Talmud. (19:52) The Muslims also fall into the same trap. (19:56) Another Surah and another verse in Quran that states that we don't need any other sources except the Quran is found in Surah 69, verse 38, verse 7. (20:15) Verse 38 says, I shall be surprised by the things you see and the things you do not see. (20:22) And verse 47 says, this is the address of the honorable messenger. (20:28) It is not the address of a poet, however rarely do you believe. (20:36) Nor is it the address of a soothsayer, rarely do you take food. (20:40) It is a revelation from the Lord of the Universe. (20:44) If he ever made up any utterances and attributed them to us, we would immediately punish him and stop the revelation today. (20:54) None of you can protect yourself. (20:57) Therefore the Prophet Muhammad is ordered by God not to utter anything besides the Quran. (21:09) Now after we see all these facts, we came back to the first question, why is the Hadith and Sunnah existing? (21:16) What is the purpose of that? (21:20) You understand from this Quranic study that Hadith and Sunnah is needed in this world to distinguish between the true Muslim and the false Muslim. (21:31) Because the majority of the Muslims will fall into the trap of Hadith and Sunnah. (21:39) Therefore by using the Hadith and Sunnah we can distinguish between who is the true Muslim and who is the so-called Muslim but actually they are not Muslims. (25:28) Al Fatiha.
